Wood-fired brisket, pulled pork & ribs on historic Main Street in Beatty, Nevada — the last great stop before Death Valley.
Smokin' J's Barbecue sits right on Main Street in Beatty — a historic Nevada mining town along US Highway 95, tucked between Death Valley and the open desert. It's one of the newer restaurants in town, but it didn't take long to become a local favorite.
The pitmaster is a Beatty local who taught himself to barbecue — no culinary school, no shortcuts, just low-and-slow wood smoke and a lot of practice. Regulars and road-trippers alike say the brisket holds its own against anything you'd find in Texas.
Everything is made fresh daily — the potato salad, the coleslaw, the jalapeño mac 'n cheese — and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating if you want to kick back and enjoy the town for the afternoon.
A western-style dining room, shaded patio seating, and the sign that tells you you've found the right spot on Main Street.
"The brisket was fork tender and the pulled pork was moist, and their BBQ sauce was sweet but not too sweet. We tried the creamy coleslaw, the jalapeño mac and cheese and the beans — delicious too."
"We are native Texans and thus take BBQ very seriously. This was good BBQ. The coleslaw was delightfully different — with pineapple. Now I want all coleslaw to have it."
"I have had BBQ all over the South, and my brisket was as good or better than any I have had in those southern states. It was juicy, tender, flavorful, smoky, and spot on!"
"Good selection of BBQ items done well. Brisket sandwich was great... very efficient and friendly staff. Place is very clean as well."
Fuel up first. Call ahead for takeout, or just follow the smoke on Main Street.
